Typically, when using a leash/collar obedience training method, the dog will at first be taught good behavior, which is usually with the leash. When the dog displays that he or she understands all of the commands that are issued by the owner, the leash is only used to correct your dog for not obeying these commands. As well to correct your dog when he or she makes a mistake. Normally, with this type of obedience training, the leash/collar obedience training method is the best way to communicate with your dog.
For you to be able to have your dog fully trained, it is believed that the dog should be able to trust the owner and allow that person to put the dog in a situation that he or she would normally not feel comfortable in. As the dog should show that he or she is safe around the owner at all times. Many people test this by using a leash, while you do not have to use a lot of force, just enough to see if your dog is trusting you fully or not.
You can also use the leash to show your dog who is the “leader” between the two of you. While training your dog you must make sure you assume the leadership role and there is a distinct line between you and your dog. If your dog does not understand this then he or she is not going to adapt to your wishes and follow your commands at all times.
The only way that you can create a bond of trust with your dog is by treating him or her fairly although you are the leader and your dog is the follower, you should not always take the role of someone who has higher authority but rather be equal to your dog and show equal affection.
While leash training is recognized as one of the more traditional styles of dog training, it is also considered the best by many people. Although some people are not able to be as demanding to their dog and are too light hearted to punish them so this type of obedience training is not as easy for some as it is for others.
For the more sensitive people, they prefer to use the reward training method where they reward their dog for correct behavior but do not reward for any incorrect behavior. This works well for most people and their dogs but not for all dogs. You need to show that you are the leader and that the dog is the follower.
